The primary purpose of this alpine-style aerial tram service is to take Gatlinburg visitors from downtown up to the top of Mt. Harrison, home of Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort. But many people find that simply taking the scenic trip to the top of the mountain and back is a fun activity in its own right.

The tram first went into service in 1972, and the original cars remained in service until 2007, when a $1 million upgrade led to their replacement. The new cars, manufactured by CWA Construction of Olten, Switzerland, are made from a high-grade aluminum alloy and offer guests 15 percent more glass viewing area than their predecessors.

During its 37 years of service, the Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway has transported more than 18 million passengers, with service running from downtown Gatlinburg every 20 minutes. The ride to the top covers 2.1 miles and costs $10 for ages 12 and older and $8.50 for ages 7 to 11. Kids 6 and younger get to ride for free.
